Plainfield Friends First Day School

young Friends in First Day school class

Plainfield Friends Meeting provides two First Day School programs. The younger group is for elementary school children; the older group is for middle school and high school students. Child care for the very young is provided in our nursery.

Our First Day School is on a two-year rotating schedule:

  • Quakerism – Students learn about Quaker testimonies and how they relate to everyday life. We also discuss Quaker history and early Friends. We use curricula recommended by Philadelphia Yearly Meeting.
  • The Bible – Students learn Bible stories and how Quakerism relates to the Bible.

Our young people attend class in the school wing of the building during the first 45 minutes of Meeting for Worship. For the last 15 minutes they join Meeting for Worship, sitting with their parents and other adults in the Meeting house. In this way, young people can hear and participate in the afterthoughts and announcements.

In the summer months, First Day School offers informal activities, often reading books aloud outdoors. We celebrate the beginning and end of the school year with the entire Meeting by enjoying a picnic in September and June.

Plainfield Friends Adult Education

We offer an introductory course, Quakerism 101, and Bible study. Both are led by members of the meeting. Our library contains many materials for learning about the Society of Friends, including newly published books and pamphlets.
